What “Little House on the Prairie” is Teaching my Girls

I love reading out loud to my girls… They both have their favorite books which I (or their dad) read to them near daily. But one we ALL enjoy is Little House on the Prairie! When we started it, I thought maybe Hailee would be too young to grasp it. But she has surprised me! She LOVES every character, she gets anxious when Laura does, she’s curious for Laura to meet some “wild Indians!” and smiles when we read how everyone dances around the fire while Pa plays his fiddle. She always gets a little sad and asks for me to read more after a chapter. We’re over half way through in less than a month!

(Claire usually enjoys a snack and a snuggle, and waits for the small black and white pictures… which is pretty much all she likes about the book. I’m not going to pretend it’s anymore than that. Just to keep it real. :) She doesn’t get it at all, but isn’t this a healthy habit? So I make her sit with us!)

My Parental Hypocrisy…

Kids are so cute. So funny. So adorable.

So creative! And adventurous.

They’re absolutely overflowing with energy, bursting at the seams with giggles and good ideas!

Especially mine… just making sure you all know how MUCH I adore my little one’s, before I move on…

While they are busy being all of these perfectly precious things, they are simultaneously, human beings…

Baby Bloopers

Who doesn’t like a collection of humorous toddler quotes? Pulling out the good ole’ quote book for this post…

It’s so important for parents too laugh. I want my kids to remember me laughing at everyone’s silliness, {and even joining in!} more than they remember me grumpy or serious… I’ve been blessed with two girls who find themselves QUITE humorous. Already. I’ve got lots of laughing ahead of me!

“Hailee, don’t do that, that’s bad manners!”
“Mama! I’m NOT manners, I’m your Hailee!”
Leaving for a daddy-daughter date, she turns to tell me {mom}
“I love you so much on a date!”
That’s what we tell her when we ditch her to go on a date.
I guess she was reminding me I was the one getting to stay home this time. Jealous!

Too Busy Chasing Memories…

This is my September 2014, photo a day blog. The 2nd half of the month is where my favorites are! At least take the time to see those. They warm my Mama heart! <3

If anyone happened to notice that I stopped posting pictures on Facebook for the month of September, here’s why:

I am so tired of being addicted to social media.

I was tired of the habit of always snapping a quick picture of every single thing my kids did. ( I mean. Really. They do so MANY adorable things.)

Stopping their child-like fun with the words of “Hold on let Mommy take a picture!” How dare I? So not worth it!!! It is time to chill. I was wasting so much time. Missing out on so much REAL LIFE, constantly being behind a camera. Always too busy chasing the preservation of memories to actually make any memories worth preserving.

I’m tired of being afraid of my kids growing up. Tired of worrying that I’m wasting the precious time I have been given. Well, I finally realized that this obsession our generation has with preserving every little detail is one of the biggest culprits stealing our joy.

Let’s just enjoy life. Let’s take a picture when it’s convenient. And when we do, let it be for the joy of simply enjoying photography. Quit saying it’s for our kids sake. Because truly, THEY DON’T CARE. Won’t ever care. (At least not as much as we think they will!) Let kids be kids and stop letting the obsession take that from them. Be there with them, and enjoy the time. The memories we mutually hold in our hearts will eventually be the only ones we care about.

All that said… I decided to dedicate this month to taking one picture a day. One small chunk of time where, as my kids played sweetly, I would quietly get my camera out, and with as little interruption as possible, I would enjoy photographing them. It allowed me time to truly capture images that are precious to me without disrupting the flow of their day (and also broke the habit of relying on my phone for photos. So nice to use my camera again!). It also allowed me to spend proper time editing those pictures. It reminded me of my love of black & white that Instagram just can’t satisfy. ;-) It’s quite a stress relief for me to sit and edit a few pictures a week. And I believe it’s good for a mom to have an outlet like that. This is mine. Here’s to enjoying photography again!

A Day of Harvesting Basil and Purposefully Unpurposeful Parenting

I wrote this to remind my self of all the ways the perfect day can happen. And just how easy it can be if I simply stop TRYING to make the perfect day happen. May I always do my job well and provide her with the room to grow as she pleases!

I only just read the name for what happened here this morning, last night: “Slow Parenting”.

At first I thought it was going to be something I didn’t like. “Slow Parenting” lends itself to sounding unlikable, I think!

I tend to think of what happened here today as “Purposefully Unpurposeful Parenting”. And while that may be a mouthful (and possibly grammatically impossible!) I think it describes it so much better than “Slow Parenting”.

As We Go about Our Day

I am working to find beauty in the simple things.

The precious times a midst the busyness.

I have written plenty about that so I will stop talking and share my heart with a few pictures.

{I recently read a blog post about having your camera set up to take pictures of you in your day to day lives with your kids… I loved the idea and here’s our result!}

Focused Toddler Projects

The following is a list of quiet, indoor, rainy or sick day activities for kids ages 0-2…

Some may seem obvious. Too obvious maybe! But I know those days… Those days where you are so BRAIN DEAD that you cannot think of even the simplest thing to entertain them with. So you turn to the TV… Well. This is here for me (and you!) to hopefully help bring ideas to mind more quickly and relieve a little stress!

I have another reason for this list. Slightly more complicated.

(So stay with me!)

I am a firm believer in teaching my kids how to focus.

(Yes. Teaching! I don’t think this comes naturally… At least not always. Especially not for very energetic, rambunctious, early movers like my girl, Hailee!)
